A step towards a greener future

The first week of September not only signals a seasonal change to Spring where days get longer, and nights get shorter, but it also marks Arbour Week; a globally recognised landmark dedicated to appreciating our environment through tree planting.

Building from last year’s foundation, the Department of Marketing Management staff and Marketing Society students convened on Second Avenue Campus, to plant an indigenous tree by the parking area next to the Registrar’s Office.

“One of the values of Nelson Mandela University is environmental stewardship, and as part of our contribution, we honour Arbour Day by planting a tree, which also increases awareness about trees and the vital role they have on our climate,” says Market Management Head of Department, Professor Felix Amoah.

The department also continued last year’s tradition of donating a picnic-style bench for students to rest under the shade and to create a sense of community.

Marketing lecturer Tania Shrosbree challenged other departments and faculties to also commemorate the day alongside their students, as it will lead to more trees on our campuses and a bigger global footprint.

“Arbour Day signifies sustainability projects that the Marketing Society has been involved in and also provides a footprint to show that the society cares about the environment, and the well-being of its campus,” says Marketing Society Chairperson, Ntokozo Rwapuluza.
